Never Let Me Go
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Review:
One of my friends suggested I read this book. She thought it would be good for our book club. She was right, it would be great for our book club. I read it and wanted to discuss it immediately! However, the only problem with the book? I am not sure how much I like it. And that is very unusual for me!
Critics are having a hard time deciding on the genre. After reaading it I can totally understand why. For instance, it has been considered science-fiction, quasi-science-fiction, sci-fi thriller, mystery, horror, fantasy, dystopian and a coming of age story. Even I am having a hard time deciding whay genre it should be. But one thing I know for sure, it is a haunting story.
Summary:
The narrator is a 31-year old woman who is a carer in England. Her name is Kathy H. This novel starts in the late 1990s. The novel is in three parts. The first part is Kathy reflecting on her childhood at Hailsham, a very different kind of boarding school in the remote English countryside. Secondly, we see Kathy and her two closest friends, Ruth and Tommy, living in the Cottages. This is a transitional housing area where there are also veterans in residence. The veterans are not from Hailsham. Thirdly, the final part shows Kathy as a carer.
Students at Hailsham are taught nothing of the outside world. Their teachers are called guardians, they have no family, and they know one day they will leave Hailsham to become donors. The students are taught the importance of being very healthy.
Review continued:
Certainly I do not want to include any spoilers. And that does make it hard to talk about. There is a gripping love story involved that much I can say. I do recommend this book but beware, you will want to discuss it with someone as soon as you finish it!
Finally, I would love to her from you if you read this – pease tell me what you think!
In addition, there is a movie based on this book. However, as of this posting I have not seen it.
- Although this book recommendation is not in the same genre, one that I also loved reading is: This is How it Always Is: https://eatreadcruise.com/review/this-is-how-it-always-is/
