Where the Crawdads Sing
My review:
Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens is a work of fiction that most readers are going to enjoy.
In this book we find ourselves looking through the eyes of Kya Clark, a young child that lives in rural North Carolina in the 1950s and ’60s with her dysfunctional family. She is referred to as Marsh Girl by those who live nearby.
Her mother abandons her, her older siblings and their alcoholic father when she is very young. One by one as her siblings and even her father leave, she learns at an early age to fend for herself. She attends school for one day and then retreats back to her marsh home. Kya learns to take care of herself.
As she gets older Kya becomes friends with one boy and later with a young man. She finds that she does not fit in with others. Those relationships do not turn out as she hopes they will. She retreats back into her own world. Kya is most at home with the beautiful nature all around her near her rustic cabin.
After this description, you may be wondering why you would want to read this book. Because it is really a good book. There is a murder, an intriguing murder trial, and a coming-of-age story intertwined in this story. The descriptions of her life in the low country seem very real, we feel her struggles as she grows up without any real guidance or support. We wonder what will become of her. And that is what makes this a compelling book to read!
My rating: 4 out of 5 stars
